Graphite electrodes serve to transfer the electrical energy from the power supply to the steel melt in the EAF bath. They are typically made using premium petroleum needle coke, coal tar pitch, and some additives (Fruehan, 1998). Specification of needle coke for the manufacture of large diameter graphite electrodes is shown in Table 12.12.

Graphite electrodes have a long history of over 100 years. Graphite is an unique material which has no known replacement in steelmaking. Graphite has the characteristics of high temperature resistance, high thermal conductivity, low electrical resistance and high strength at high temperatures. In the electric arc furnace, graphite electrodes can conduct massive amount of electricity into the furnace to melt scrap steel and withstand temperatures as high as 4000°C.
